The sinuses are the cavities that are present in the skull. They are responsible for making the skull lighter. They produce mucus and provide a safe layer and prevent unwanted particles. Sinus surgery might be required to treat various sinus problems. However, some of the sinus issues do not need surgery and can be treated with non-surgical treatments.
The sinus surgery involves removing the infected sinus tissue. When you decide on undergoing a sinus surgery, it is important to be aware of the procedure. Dr Shareef has helped several patients with sinus issues. He can handle sinus issues ranging from simple to complex.
Why Do I Need Sinus Surgery?
The sinus system may face issues such as polyps, thickened lining, and consistent infections. All these can cause blockage of the drainage pathways of the sinuses. This can further lead to respiratory issues. In some cases, sinus problems do not require surgery. On the other hand, surgery is the only solution to treat sinus problems.
Different Types of Sinus Surgery
The following are the different types of sinus surgeries:
- Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS): It is the most common type of sinus surgery and is performed using an endoscope. The endoscope is inserted into the nose to view the inside of the nose. This procedure removes infected tissues and other blockages to clear the nasal passages. This procedure can cause mild discomfort and can be finished in a short period. It can be performed on an outpatient basis.
- Image-guided surgery: Image-guided endoscopic surgery is used for severe cases of sinus problems. In this procedure, a three-dimensional mapping system along with an endoscope is used to set the position of surgical instruments. With this, the surgeon can easily look at difficult sinus passages and can remove tissues and blockages.
- Balloon sinuplasty: It is a minimally invasive procedure. This procedure is suitable if no tissues or blockages need to be removed. This makes use of an endoscope and catheter to insert a balloon into the nose. Then the balloon will be inflated to improve the passage way to the sinuses.
- Caldwell Luc surgery: It is a less common and more invasive procedure. This procedure is performed when there is a growth in the sinus cavity. A new opening will be made from the maxillary sinus to the nose. This allows mucus to drain from sinus cavities.
How to Prepare for Sinus Surgery?
Before performing the procedure, the doctor will conduct a pre-operation screening to ensure you are suitable for surgery. The doctor may prescribe medications to prevent swelling and infection. The doctor may also recommend the following:
- Quit smoking three weeks before your surgery
- Avoid taking over-the-counter medications a week before the procedure
- Avoid eating and drinking from midnight of the day before your surgery
- Arrange someone to drop you home after surgery
How About Recovery after the Sinus Procedure?
If general anesthesia is used during surgery, then you will be shifted to a recovery room until your anesthesia wears off. If local anesthesia is used, then you can go back home immediately. A nasal package will be inserted into the nasal passage to control bleeding. But, Dr Shareef often does not pack the nose as it is uncomfortable to the patients. Before leaving the hospital, the he also gives you instructions on taking care of yourself.
You can recover within a few days of the procedure. However, the recovery time varies based on the type of surgery performed, your age, general health, etc. You may experience mild discomfort, pain, and nasal congestion for around two weeks following the procedure. Medications will be prescribed to relieve any pain or discomfort. You need to wait for around two weeks to get back to your daily routine. You should also avoid activities such as lifting weights, running, etc. that can increase your blood pressure.
